BRITISH BUSINESSMAN UNDER HOUSE ARREST IN MOSCOW PENDING PROSECUTION

British businessman Darren Keane, 44, has been released from pretrial detention and placed under house arrest in Moscow, amid concerns for his physical health while in custody. He was arrested in June on the charge of illegal entrepreneurship associated with the organizing of a gambling club, but was shifted to house arrest recently due to concern for his health

COMMENT: Keane, the chief executive of Storm International Gaming, is accused of failing to close down the Shangri-La casino in central Moscow after a gambling ban was introduced across Russia in July 2009, on the basis that it was not appropriate for Russian society. Keane's trial is expected over the next few months. If convicted, he could be jailed for up to five years. The lesson learned here is...obey the law.
