During the course of this summer, British tourists have had very bad luck on Spain's resort island of Ibiza, located roughly 80 kilometers off the coast of Valencia. Specifically, five Britons have died from a multitude of victim-precipitated accidents while on holiday.
On August 10, Christopher Barrington, 31, died in the swimming pool of the Hotel Puchet in the town of San Antonio. Strangely, he was not a guest of the hotel. Then on August 1, Barry Hesford, 21, drowned in the pool of the Aparthotel THB Bahia, also in San Antonio, under similar circumstances. Additionally, three other Brits died on the island after falling from terrace balconies at resorts on Ibiza. Their names were Samuel McCaughey, 23, Jodie Taylor, 25 and Roberto Marcuccio, 24.
COMMENT: It is safe to say that many of these accidents were influenced by excessive drinking or a combination of alcohol and drugs. In McCaughey's case, friends said that he was attempting to walk on the narrow balcony wall after a night’s drinking when he fell from the third floor. In Jodie Taylor's case, she reportedly had been arguing with another woman on a balcony above her's when she lost her balance and plunged to the street below.
Some of these accidents have also obviously occurred while tourists were engaged in what the Spaniards refer to as, "balconing," which involves jumping from one balcony to another after a night of heavy drinking. Some tourists have even apparently jumped from their balconies in the hope of landing in swimming pools below.
There is no question that pushing the envelope can be irreversible. While some folks live as if there were no tomorrow, quite often that becomes a fact, sadly. Hopefully, we can all learn from the imprudence of others.
