HONDURAN PRESIDENT BANS CELLPHONES FROM CABINET MEETINGS

For those of you who regularly read my blog (aka SSA--Staying Safe Abroad), every now and then it is nice to see evidence of what we all think about during so much of the day: The downsides of cell phones.

Suddenly, I've become a fan of Honduran President Porfirio Lobo, who seems to have reached a level of exasperation when it comes to the overuse of cellphones by members of his presidential cabinet. So, beginning next week, he is banning all cell phones from meeting rooms.

The irritated president proclaimed the ban during a Cabinet meeting today (August 30) which happened to have been televised by a state-run television channel. He apparently has been on a low smolder for some months on this issue. In January, he reportedly cautioned the cabinet on cellphone use during meetings and in May he scolded them for using sirens to get through the congested streets of Tegucigalpa.
