TOURIST TROLLEY IN RIO DERAILS, 5 KILLED, 30 INJURED

Rio de Janeiro's highly popular tourist tram in the city's Santa Teresa section collided with a bus on Saturday (August 26), forcing it to derail, killing five and injuring 30 others. The tram's roof was ripped off when it overturned and smashed into a stone wall running along the rails.

COMMENT: Over the years, the tram has had periodic accidents. In June, another lethal accident occurred when a tourist who was traveling on the tram's foot board slipped and fell off a 15-meter bridge, killing him instantly. Unfortunately, the 24-year-old Frenchman slipped and fell from the tram while leaning out of the car in his effort to take a photo as the trolley passed through a traditional aqueduct.

On days of high tourist traffic, the streetcar usually exceeds its passenger capacity. Rio de Janeiro is scheduled to host the World Cup in 2014 and the Summer Olympics in 2016.
