TWO IMPRISONED AMERICANS IN IRAN EXPECTED TO BE FREED

Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad said earlier today (September 13) that that two US hikers, Shane Bauer and Josh Fattal, both 29, who were arrested near Iran's border with Iraq and sentenced for espionage will soon be released in a humanitarian gesture.

COMMENT: Bauer and Fattal were sentenced in Iran last month to eight years in prison following their July 2009 arrest along with a third American, Sarah Shourd, who was freed on $500,000 bail in September 2010 and returned home to the US. The three say they were hiking in the mountains along Iraq's border with Iran.

The Americans' attorney said that an Iranian court has ordered their release on bail, (US$500,000) adding that they would be allowed to leave the Islamic state after their release.

Of course, the lingering question that most reasonable people would ask is why would American citizens decide to engage in recreational hiking in northern Iraq?
