Car Thief Arrested After Breaking into Romanian Tourist's Rental Car

Steven Heylak, 29, has been was charged with fourth-degree grand larceny, fourth-degree criminal mischief, auto stripping and fifth-degree criminal possession of stolen property after breaking into a Romanian tourist's rental car in a motel parking lot in Niagara Falls on Sunday (October 2).

COMMENT: He was charged shortly after police received a report of a man bleeding from cuts to his knuckles on both hands. City police found blood on the sidewalk and said they were able to link the incident to an injured man and make a quick arrest. Police said Heylak was found with a GPS and camcorder that had been reported stolen by the tourist.

Visitors are reminded that auto theft and auto break-ins are one of the most frequently committed crimes in the US. Consequently, residents and tourists alike should never leave anything valuable to be observable from outside of a vehicle. If a portable GPS is rented by travelers, it should be locked in the trunk [boot] or concealed from view in some fashion.
