Despite High Unemployment, Spain Tops European Tourists to Puerto Rico

According the Purteo Rico Tourism Company, Spain remains the top source of European tourists who visit Puerto Rico despite the Iberian nation’s unemployment rate of 20%. From June 2010 to June 2011 – tourist visits from Spain grew by roughly 5%, percent.

COMMENT: The high level of tourists from Spain is attributed to Iberia having three weekly flights (four in the summer months) from Madrid to San Juan. At least 4,600 Spanish tourists visited the Caribbean island during the last fiscal year, based on people registered at hotels that officially reported their overnight stays. The actual number, of course, is much higher considering that those that stay in apartments and private homes are not included in hotel reporting requirements to tourism authorities.
