French Tourist, 60, Dies of Natural Causes in Namibia

Andre Michen, 60, a French tourist, passed away at the Palmwag Lodge (http://www.palmwag.com.na), near Sesfontein, on September 28, presumably from lung complications. A French physician who happened to be staying at the Lodge was called to assist after Michen complained that he was not feeling well. While the doctor was examining him, the man passed away from apparent pulmonary problems.

COMMENT: According to local police, Michen's body was transported to Windhoek for an autopsy and coordination with the French Embassy for repatriation of Mr. Michen's body. The Frenchman was part of a group of other French tourists who were visiting Namibia. They were staying at Palmwag Lodge, about 120 kilometers (74 miles) from Sesfontein.

As I've cautioned in the past, all tourists over the age of 40 should have a thorough physical examination, EKG and appropriate blood work before traveling abroad, particularly to regions and areas that do not have adequate medical facilities. Doing so can easily head off an irreversible medical emergency. ALL travelers should also ensure that they have international medical evacuation and treatment coverage.
