German Hiker, 50, Falls from Cliff, Dies in Austria

A German hiker, 50, who was hiking alone in the Austrian mountains near Reutte, sadly fell from a 200-meter cliff on Saturday (October 1) and was killed. According to two witnesses who saw the man fall, he apparently lost his balance and slipped. They called alpine rescuers after the incident, who found the man at the bottom of the steep ravine.

COMMENT: The area in which the hiker fell apparently is a high-risk region for hikers, as an elderly Austrian, 71, was also killed during a hike in the western province of Vorarlberg the following day. His body was recovered by a medic chopper. Also, a 46-year-old man sustained serious injuries when he fell down a 10-meter cliff at a climbing range in the Hohe Wand region in Lower Austria’s Wiener Neustadt district on Saturday as well. He was airlifted to a clinic in nearby Mödling.

Mountain hiking is a wonderful sport and I myself have enjoyed it over the years with a long trek in the Annapurna Circuit, two trips to the summit of Mount Fuji and smaller mountains. Yet, unfortunately, as we age, our hearts believe we're 20, but not our legs and agility. The falls described in this posting are reminders that we must face our limitations.
