Missing American, 23, Found in Tuscany, Victim of a Hit-and-Run

Italian police have announced that the body of Allison Owens, 23, of Columbus, OH (USA), was found in a canal beside a heavily traveled road in San Giovanni Valdarno. Ms. Owens, a local tour guide, had been missing for three days; her bod was found earlier today (October 5), the apparent victim of a hit-and-run.

COMMENT: An autopsy has been ordered to determine cause of death. It is believed that Ms. Owens was jogging when a motorist struck her and left the scene. Police suggested that Owens might have been listening to an iPod and did not hear an approaching vehicle. She was last seen alive Sunday afternoon (October 2), and more than 100 police using dogs searched for her after friends reported her missing.

Jogging is a great way of staying fit. Unfortunately, though, Italian motorists often drive as if there is no tomorrow. In such a high-risk environment, wearing ear buds and listening to an iPod severely inhibits a jogger's ability to avoid serious injury and/or death. When faced with such risk, running at a local school or even in a gym pose far less risk to injury if one is determined to listen to music.
