Italian police on Friday (October 7) arrested Pietro Stefanoni, 56, the driver of a car believed to have struck and killed American citizen, Allison Owens, 23, while she was jogging on a Tuscan highway on accusations of manslaughter and leaving the scene of a crime. Stefanoni was jailed after nearly 12 hours of questioning.
COMMENT: As I mentioned in my earlier posting on this subject, Stefanoni did not voluntarily turn himself into police, but was located by the police based on metallic fragments he left at the scene of the accident as well as speed camera footage. He had already had major repairs done to the vehicle without contacting police.

Owens was believed to have been struck between 1720 and 1800 on Sunday (October 2), while jogging along a busy state highway running through the town of San Giovanni Valdarno, between Florence and Arezzo.
A statement by the Owens' attorney, Valentino Durante, is expected sometime this weekend.
Although Owens' jogging on a busy highway and reportedly wearing iPod ear-buds may well have increased her vulnerability to being hit by a car, Stefanoni should be prosecuted to the full extent of the law for not only the hit-and-run offense, but leaving the scene of an accident involving death, his efforts to conceal his crime by having his vehicle covertly repaired and failure to report the matter to the police.
