Update: Italian Driver Who Killed American, 23, Turns Self In, Claiming He Fell Asleep

An Italian man who claims he fell asleep at the wheel on Sunday (October 2), when his car fatally struck American citizen Allison Owens, 23, from Columbus, OH (USA), has turned himself in to Italian authorities. Owens was hit while jogging in Tuscany; her body was later found in a canal.

COMMENT: Owens' family attorney Valentino Durante told the AP that until he meets with prosecutors, he cannot comment on the case. Police in Arezzo, where the investigation is underway, were about to give a news conference concerning Friday's development. Prosecutors are reportedly considering manslaughter charges.

As I noted in my previous posting, the adherence to traffic laws and the rigorous nature of traffic enforcement is much, much different in countries abroad. Consequently, travelers must be ever vigilant if jogging in countries where traffic laws are both frenetic and ignored Additionally, joggers should not wear iPod ear-buds in their ears while running in such environments, due to the risk of not being aware of approaching vehicles. Generally speaking, I advise foreign visitors to other countries to join a local gym, rather than jogging on roadways where fast-moving cars are present.
