Traveler's Alert: TSA Security Screeners Unlikely to Be in the Holiday Spirit

As with most holiday seasons, don't expect this year to be any different from last year when it comes to Transportation Security Administration (TSA) security screeners being jolly during the holidays. If anything, they are unlikely to have no more light-hearted thoughts than the Grinch.

Once again, zero tolerance is expected as air travelers pack gift-wrapped boxes in checked and carry-on luggage.

COMMENT: My advice is to mail wrapped holiday gifts ahead if you will be visiting family and friends. Or, alternatively, carry unsealed greeting cards along with gift cards in your CARRY-ON luggage.

Mailing gifts ahead is particularly recommended when it comes to electronic gadgets, given TSA's regulation that checked luggage be UNLOCKED. Also, don't forget insurance if you mail ahead.

Also consider purchasing small gifts that can easily be carried in your carry-on luggage. Yet, don't wrap them before departure, but do so when you arrive at your destination.

And yes, some TSA employees have been convicted of theft from luggage.

For our international readers, most of the advice above will be helpful to you, too, but fortunately not all countries require that luggage be UNLOCKED.
