University Group Reports Increase in Kidnappings in Colombia

According to a recent report released by Sergio Arboleda University's Center for Security and Democracy, kidnappings in Colombia rose by 10% in 2011 compared to 2010.

COMMENT: For our readers who travel in Colombia, they should note that more kidnappings are carried out in the Department of Valle than any other department. After Valle, kidnappings occur in priority order in the departments of
Antioquia, Nariño, Arauca, Cauca and Caquetá.

As our regular readers know, two Polish kayakers were rescued from a river in Caqueta a couple of days ago by the Colombian Air Force when their tandem kayak capsized. They no doubt were enjoying very good karma not to have alternatively bumped into the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC) which is responsible for the majority of rural kidnappings.
