Phuket Tourists Warned of Leaving Drinks Unattended as Date-Rape Drugs Used

Most of our readers are well aware of my cautious warnings about the high risk of transport accidents in Phuket, the shake-downs of tourists and the dangers of riding two-wheeled motorized vehicles if you don't have experience, but tourist police are now warning visitors about the inherent risk of leaving your drink unattended in local bars following incidents of tourists having their drinks “spiked” with potent sedatives in recent weeks.

In two recent cases, victims are thought to have had a date-rape drug, possibly gamma-hydroxybutyric acid (“GBH”), covertly added to their drinks, particularly on Soi Paradise, one of Phuket's most popular nightlife magnets.

COMMENT: Although date-rape drugs are used by both men and women worldwide to render tourists and visitors helpless so that they can be robbed or taken advantage of, the use of such drugs is somewhat new in Phuket. As most of us know, such drugs usually take effect in 15-20 minutes and normally render the victim defenseless as motor controls become neutralized and a coma-like state emerges.

The potentiality of the use of these drugs on lone and vulnerable patrons is one reason why it is best to "party" with others who can assist you if you become a victim to these drugs. Additionally, it is never wise to leave one's drink unattended. If you must leave your drink, order another.
