Traveler's Alert: Obtain a Thorough Physical Exam Before Going Abroad

Syed Abdul Jalaludeen, 54, accompanied by his wife, Rejina Begum and two daughters, arrived in New Delhi on December 7, but suffered a massive heart attack as the family was planning to return to their home in Kuala Lumpur earlier today.

After completing all the mandatory check-in procedures to board an Air Asia flight to Kuala Lumpur, Jalaludeen was climbing some stairs to go to the passengers' waiting room when he complained of chest pain and collapsed. On hearing the screams from his wife and daughters, a medical team at the airport rushed to the spot and examined him, but he was already gone.

COMMENT: As I have in the past, I strongly urge all foreign travelers to obtain a thorough physical examination before going abroad, so as to head off any serious medical problem they may be unaware of. For those over 40, this should also include a cardiovascular stress test to identify the presence of any heart or vascular deficiencies that might prompt a serious event while abroad. It is never good to die away from home.
