Update: Police, Firefighter Strike in Rio de Janeiro Losing Steam as Carnival Approaches

As this update is posted, it appears that with city officials in Rio already having cracked down on the strike that began on Friday (February 10) by arresting some 17 police officers and threatening others with disciplinary action if they strike (which is against the law for first responders), fervor for most strikers continuing the effort is beginning to wane.

COMMENT: With Rio hosting the upcoming 2014 World Cup and 2016 Olympic Games, all eyes are on the city to ensure that city officials can handle major events like Carnival, which officially begins on February 17 and runs through February 21.

Nevertheless, the city has 14,000 soldiers on stand-by in the event there are indicators that the police and firefighter strike begins to gain steam, although for the moment that seems doubtful.
