Update: "Underwear Bomber" Gets a Life Sentence for Attempting to Down NW253

Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab, 25, AKA "the underwear bomber," was sentenced earlier today (February 16) to a life in prison for attempting to detonate an IED aboard NW253, which was bound for Detroit from Amsterdam on Christ Day, 2009.

The mandatory punishment for Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab, the well-educated son of a wealthy Nigerian banker, was never in doubt after he surprised the courtroom and pleaded guilty to all charges on the second day of trial last fall.

COMMENT: Early in 2009, the defendant traveled to Yemen in a desperate bid to see Anwar al-Awlaki, an American-born cleric and one of the best-known al-Qaeda figurehead, who was killed by a US done in Yemen in 2011. Ironically, Al-Awlaki and the bomb maker were killed in the drone attack together.
