Two Swiss tourists, 19 and 20, respectively, had their cash and possessions stolen on Thursday (March 1) while visiting the famous tourist district of Orchha in Tikamgarh. The incident occurred while the two women were relaxing on the sands of the Betwa River, near Kanchnaaghat.
COMMENT: Although the two tourists from Zurich reported the theft, it is unlikely that an arrest will be made, considering that the thief could not be identified. All tourists and travelers should be vigilant at all times, particularly when traveling in developing countries where crimes of opportunity are commonplace.
Inasmuch as this was not an armed robbery, but a case of larceny, the theft might have been prevented had the tourists worn a "fanny pack" or backpack or kept them secure. Additionally, resting on a secluded beach is never prudent where it is impossible to safeguard oneself and possessions.
