India: Businessman Arrested in Connection with Murder of Frenchwoman, 34

Police have arrested an Indian businessman in connection with the murder of a 34-year-old French woman in a New Delhi guesthouse located in a district popular with backpackers.

The tourist's body was found in the city's Paharganj district, a collection point for budget travelers and backpackers, near the capital's main train station.

COMMENT: Strangely, the man alleged to have been responsible for the European's death, had rented the room in the guesthouse. The suspect, the owner of a handicrafts shop in the area, had apparently fled the capital before being arrested by police Sunday in Srinagar, the summer capital of Kashmir.

The victim has not been formally identified, but the TIMES OF INDIA quoted her sister as saying she was a schoolteacher who had arrived in India on March 19. The woman was reportedly strangled, although an autopsy is scheduled before her remains are repatriated.

This posting will be updated as new information becomes available.
