Saipan: Japanese Tourist Victim of Nightime Pedestrian Purse-Snatching

A female Japanese tourist, 26, was the victim of a purse-snatching on May 2 as she was was walking along Beach Road, Garapan with a friend at roughly 2000 hours. The incident occurred when the assailant approached the tourist from behind.

The victim was not injured, but lost a her wallet, a credit card, cash amounting to $120, sunglasses, a Nikon camera and a make-up kit. The good news is that the victim was not harmed

COMMENT: A much more serious incident occurred on April 12 when a Filipino cashier a retail outlet sustained minor head injuries when three masked men entered the shop she was working at and assaulted her, after which they stole $500 in cash.

Personal crime, particularly against pedestrians walking at night, is on the rise in Saipan. Visitors are urged to use reputable taxis at night.
