Thailand: American Exchange Student, 23, Raped by Local in Krabi

A Thai football [soccer] player has denied allegations that he raped a 23-year-old American exchange student near Krabi, across Phang Nga Bay from Phuket, on May 31.

The suspect was arrested on Friday (June 1) by Krabi city police after they were notified that an American woman was sexually attacked by the assailant at Nopparat Thara Beach in Ao Nang, a popular tourist area.

Reportedly,  the victim was taken to a local clinic for treatment of injuries to her face. After giving police a detailed description of her assailant, the woman was sent to Krabi Hospital for an examination and further treatment. She also was in shock from the experience.

COMMENT: The woman's assailant has been remanded and will be charged.

Unfortunately, the sexual assault and rape of foreign women in Thailand  is a frequent occurrence, particularly in situations where the victims are alone, intoxicated or vulnerable to being taken advantage of.

Krabi is a town on the west coast of southern Thailand at the mouth of the Krabi River where it empties in Phang Nga Bay. The population is 24,986. The town is the capital of Krabi Province and Krabi district.

This case will be updated as new information becomes available.
