UK: London's Heathrow Airport Falls Behind European Competitors

Any of our readers who have been Heathrow Airport of late will attest to clogged departure lounges, wall-to-wall people, delayed flights and long immigration and security screening lines, not to mention frequent strikes which simply exasperates fatigued and jet-lagged travelers.

Although Heathrow should have added a third runway decades ago to keep pace with increasing passenger demands, France, Germany and Italy have added some 24 new runways in recent years, thus resulting in Heathrow's current facilities crisis.

COMMENT: It should also be noted that the government of Conservative-led PM David Cameron blocked development of a third runway when it came to power in 2010 as further expansion of the west London site would mean a huge increase in the number of planes flying directly over the capital.

Unfortunately, global air traveler who really need to avoid missed and delayed flights out of Heathrow are well advised to route themselves through the Netherlands, France, Italy and Germany, which also afford far better connections to Latin America and Asia, and particularly China.
