Perú: Canadian, 25, American, 23, Killed, Missing, Respectively, While Rafting in Cuzco

Although details are somewhat sketchy, police in Cuzco province, site of the Inca ruins of Machu Picchu, report that on Tuesday (December 18), Canadian tourist, Nishant Fozdar Jagdeep, 25, was killed and American citizen, Alicia Perrien, 23, was reported missing after a group of foreigners had their raft capsize in the rough, rain-swollen waters of the Vilcanota River.

The group of three rafts included tourists from the US, Argentina, France, Hungary, Netherlands, New Zealand, Spain and Sweden.

COMMENT: It is essential that foreign travelers and tourists thoroughly screen foreign tour operators, particularly those in developing countries, where safety protocols are often overlooked in favor of lucrative revenue, often when weather conditions mitigate against a safe experience.
