Tanzania: Canadian Social Worker, 41, Reportedly Murdered While on Charitable Mission

Tragically, Canadian Susan Wells, 41, a social worker, was reportedly murdered on November 26, outside the Tanzania town of Arusha, although details at this time are somewhat sketchy.

Our condolences and thoughts go out to Ms. Wells' family at this difficult time.

Wells was in Tanzania for a month-long charitable mission to help local children. Although a full-time social worker in Toronto, Ms. Wells apparently had been participating in such missions in the country in the past. She had just arrived on her current mission last week.

Although local police have a suspect in custody, he has not as yet been questioned.

COMMENT: Fortunately, family and friends are being assisted by Canada's Department of Foreign Affairs and International Trade, as well as consular officials in Dar es Salaam.

This report will be updated as new information becomes available.
