South Africa: Olympian Oscar Pistorius, 26, To Be Charged in Murder of Girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp, 30

According to The Associated Press, South African Olympian Oscar Pistorius, 26, is reportedly going to be charged in the murder of his girlfriend, model Reeva Steenkamp, 30, the latter of whom was shot four times and killed at approximately 0300 hours earlier today inside of Pistorius' home in the capital of Pretoria.

COMMENT: Without attribution, police made reference to previous calls to Pistorius' home in the past. Reportedly, there was no one else in the home except for Pistorious and Steenkamp. News reports also indicate that police are interviewing witnesses and neighbors who heard or observed events before the shooting occurred.

Mr. Pistorius did have firearms in the home and reportedly prided himself in his proficiency and accuracy. A 9mm semi-auto pistol was collected during the crime scene search.

South Africa has some of the world's highest murder rates, with nearly 50 people killed each day in the nation of 50 million. It also has high rates of rape, other assaults, robbery and carjackings. According to the United Nations, South Africa has the second highest rate of shooting deaths in the world, second only to Colombia.

As a certified National Rifle Association firearms instructor and range officer, I have always cautioned my students that "knowing when NOT to shoot is far more important than knowing when to shoot," emphasizing "that a home owner must ALWAYS ensure and identify that they are confronting an armed assailant and not an innocent bystander."

This report will be updated as new information becomes available.
