Péru: German Cyclist, 50, Shot, Killed on Road in Condorcanqui Province, Robbery Motive Ruled Out

Although details are a bit sketchy, according to El Comercio, Rudolf Hilmer, age 50, a cyclist from Germany who was destined for Brazil, was found shot and killed this week in the district of Santa María de Nieva in Condorcanqui province.

COMMENT: Our prayers and condolences go out to the victim's family.

According to local police, an autopsy will be conducted in Bagua Grande in the search for DNA and other physical evidence which may lead to clues as to the motive for Mr. Hilmer's death.

Initial indicators suggest that robbery may not have been the motive, as the victim's bike had not been stolen; he also still had many possessions of value.

As I have said in the past, traveling by bicycle in Latin America, particularly alone, is fraught with additional risks.

This report will be updated as new information becomes available.
