Eritrea: US Department of State, Effective May 10, Urges All US Citizens to Defer Travel

COMMENT: Effective May 10, 2013, the US Department of State warns its citizens against all travel to Eritrea and to defer all travel to the country.

Beginning early in 2012, political turmoil began to dramatically unfold in Eritrea. The tone of political rhetoric is predominantly anti-US.

Not only are foreign nationals prevented from traveling beyond the city limits of the capital of Asmara, but rarely are travel permits issued.

It is essential that any foreign national traveling in Eritrea carry their passport at all times as passport checks are a frequent occurrence.
