Cyprus: Russian Tourist, 35, Dies, Father Injured After Speedboat Hits Duo Outside Swimming Area

According to The Cyprus Mail, Russian tourist Konstantin Maltsev, 35, and his 63-year-old father were hit by a speedboat in Coral Bay on Sunday at approximately 1230 hours resulting in the death of Maltsev and minor injuries to his father, the latter of whom was later released from the hospital.

Maltsev, tragically, was dead on arrival at the Paphos Hospital.

Unfortunately, both father and son were outside of a designated swimming area and were roughly one kilometer off-shore at the time the speedboat hit them.

COMMENT: The speedboat driver recalls a loud sound followed by screams, which caused him to promptly put his boat into neutral and pull the two Russians into his boat and rush them shore.

A blood alcohol analysis of the speedboat driver was negative, although he was detained by police to determine the facts that led to the death of Maltsev and injury to his father.

Konstantin had arrived in Cyprus with his parents and brother on September 29. No doubt, the Russian Embassy in Nicosia will be assisting in the repatriation of Konstantin's remains back home.

It is strongly suggested that all foreign travelers comply fully with all regulations pertaining to safety issues. If foreign tourists are not aware of swimming restrictions and other life-safety matters, they should ask lifeguards, first responders and/or police.
