India: Swiss Skier Killed in Avalanche in Kashmir, Two Others Rescued

According to The Windsor Staran Indian official says an avalanche has killed a Swiss tourist who was skiing in the Himalayas in Indian-held Kashmir. A local official, Tariq Ganai, says two other Swiss skiers were rescued hours after the avalanche struck on Friday (January 24).

He says the three decided to go skiing, ignoring a warning that the area was unsafe due of bad weather.

The area where the avalanche occurred is in Gulmarg region, 55 kilometers (35 miles) northwest of Srinagar, Kashmir's main city.

COMMENT: Avalanches and landslides are common in Kashmir, which is divided between India and neighboring Pakistan.

Needless to say, if you are new to any country, please adhere to the advice of local officials, who almost always know the country far better than visitors. They also know the limitations of search-and-rescue resources than those that have little knowledge about the country.
