Venezuela: Update--Seven Suspects Arrested in Shooting Deaths of Former Miss Venezuela, Spouse

As a follow-up to my posting of January 9, Venezuelan police are apparently searching for four additional suspects in the murders of former Miss Venezuela Monica Spear, 29, and her husband, Irishman Thomas Henry Berry, 39, whose bodies were found on Monday night (January 6).

The couple’s daughter was also shot during the apparent armed robbery.

COMMENT: Seven other suspects have been arrested thus far in the double-homicide and are planning to be arraigned, although no date has been set.

The seven people arrested on Wednesday (January 8) include four men, a woman and two teenagers.

The couple were shot to death by several gunmen after their vehicle broke down from mechanical trouble on a highway in Carabobo state.

According to the Venezuelan Violence Observatory, the homicide rate in Venezuela is 79 per 100,000 citizens.

This report will be updated at such time as the eleven suspects in the shooting are arraigned. In the interest of transparency, hopefully their identities will be released as well.
