Global Impact: Update--Vietnamese News Report Picks Up Signal Emitting from MH Flight 370

According to The Associated Press, China's state media, the Xinhua News Agency, citing a local Vietnamese media report, reports that a Vietnamese search and rescue official has reported that signals have been detected from the Malaysian Airlines flight MH370 about 220 kilometers (120 miles) southwest of Vietnam's southernmost coastal province of Ca Mau.

Malaysia Airlines says its Boeing 777-200 carrying 239 people lost contact over the South China Sea early Saturday morning on a flight from Kuala Lumpur to Beijing. 

COMMENT: According to, Malaysia Airlines has had only two fatal crashes, the last occurring in 1995. According to international airline safety record analysis, the carrier has had a reasonably safe record considering that the carrier traveled 1.8 million miles since its inception.
