Cyprus: Swedish Tourist, 21, Raped by Two Assailants in Ayia Napa on Easter Sunday

According to http://www.incyprus.philenews.com, two suspects, one a Cypriot from Nicosia and a Romanian, 24, have been remanded into custody in connection with the rape of a 21-year-old Swedish tourist.

The attack occurred in Ayia Napa, a popular beach resort and gathering point for young adults of all ages.

COMMENT: Having lived in Nicosia for a total of six years as a security adviser, I cannot overemphasize that single women in Cyprus are particularly vulnerable to predators.

The fact cited above is why I strongly suggest that single women visit Cyprus in groups, largely from the standpoint that there is always safety in numbers.

A 22-year-old Cypriot from Nicosia and a 24-year-old Romanian national have been remanded for eight days in connection with the rape.

State pathologist Eleni Antoniou, who conducted a forensic exam on the victim, said that there was physical evidence that the Swedish tourist had been raped.

I offer the below link from THE GUARDIAN in terms of linking up with like minded travelers:

As with all on-line resources, I strongly urge women travelers to have a healthy sense of suspicion and "verify, verify, verify."

I also suggest that single women use on-line resources for "women only."
