Libya: Update--Kidnapping of Jordan's Ambassador to Tripoli

According to CNN, Jordanian Foreign Minister Nasser Judeh said earlier today (April 16) that the kidnappers had not contacted his government, but he held them responsible for the safety of the ambassador.

According to The Libya Herald, kidnappers of Jordanian ambassador Fawaz Al-Aytan have demanded that a Libyan militant Islamist be released from prison in Jordan in exchange for the diplomat.

One of the Libyans investigating al-Aytan’s abduction said that the kidnappers wanted Mohamed Dersi, who was given a life sentence in 2007 for planning to bomb a Jordanian Airport, to be released, according to Reuters.

COMMENT: The Interior Ministry was very angry and upset by the incident, he said. “It is unacceptable, especially because the relations between Jordan and Libya are very good, and many Libyans receive medical treatment in Jordan," a spokesperson said.

This report will be updated as soon as new information is received.
