Louisiana: Southern University Senior, 26, Shot, Killed During Armed Robbery, All Life is Precious

According to, Michael Bailey, 26, was a Southern University senior visiting San Francisco from Baton Rouge.

Prosecutors said that in the early hours of October 4, 2009, Bailey and two friends were ambushed, beaten and robbed at the Alice Griffity housing project in the city's Bayview district after they drove a young woman home from a nightclub.

San Francisco Assistant District Attorney Eric Fleming said Mr. Bailey was killed after he attempted to take an assault rifle away from one of the assailants.

COMMENT: When seconds really matter in a situation that must be fully processed in our brain so quickly, there is always a very fine line in whether to comply or resist in an armed robbery, not knowing the intent of the assailants.

What emerged next, Bailey heard the assailants say, "Shoot him, shoot him, take him out...." Moments later, Michael Bailey was dead.

In a sealed courtroom Friday (June 20), a San Francisco jury pronounced 25-year-old William Jones and 27 year-old Lance Molina guilty of all charges, including first-degree murder, conspiracy to commit robbery and participation in a street gang.

Fleming said Jones was a member of the Double Rock gang and fired the fatal shots.

"The biggest message we send is that we will take gang prosecution very seriously," said Fleming. "If you as an individual commit crimes with other members of your gang, we will try to prosecute you for that gang enhancement."

The two defendants both face 25 years to life on EACH charge.

A mistrial was declared for a third defendant, who was a minor at the time of the shooting. The woman who prosecutors said lured the victims to the shooting site was acquitted.

Tragically, Michael Bailey left behind a wife and three children, two of them twin sons.

This report will be updated once the defendants are sentenced.
