Global Impact: Air India Flight 144 Aboard B-777 Causes Engine Fire After Takeoff, Returns to EWR

According to Reuters, an Air India flight with 313 passengers aboard bound for Mumbai was forced to return to Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR) on Sunday (July 13) after a bird strike resulted in an engine fire on a Boeing 777, according to airport officials.

A few minutes after taking off, the pilot of Air India Flight 144 reported flames coming from an engine on the port side of the aircraft, according to Erica Dumas, spokeswoman for the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey reported.

COMMENT: The pilot then dumped fuel before returning to Newark half an hour after takeoff.

The pilot requested that an ambulance be on call at the terminal, but there were no reported injuries, Dumas said. She added that the flight bound for Mumbai had multiple blown tires and was now disabled on an EWR taxiway.

The airline was in the process of rescheduling alternate flights for passengers.
