Bolivia/Argentina: La Paz Deports Retired Argentine Army Officer Jorge Horacio Páez Senestrari

According to the BBC, Bolivia has deported retired Argentine Army Captain Jorge Horacio Páez Senestrari, to Buenos Aires, where he faces a 25-year jail sentence after being convicted for crimes against humanity committed under the military dictatorship, (1976-1983).

Paez Senestrari, 68, was handed over to Argentine authorities by Interior minister Jorge Perez Sunday (August 10) at the border town of Yacuiba, the ministry said in a statement on Monday (August 11).

In Argentina, Páez was sentenced to 25 years in prison for “aggravated homicide and violation of domicile and torture," the La Paz government said in a statement.

COMMENT: An INTERPOL arrest warrant had been issued against the retired captain, who was arrested Friday (August 8) in his home in the eastern Bolivian city of Santa Cruz, the statement said.

Up to 30,000 people were killed or disappeared under the military dictatorship in Argentina, most of them opponents of the regime.
