Colombia: President Santos Seemingly Fatigued by Continued Rebel Attacks

According to The Latin American Tribune, Colombia President Juan Manuel Santos has warned guerrillas of the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC) that ongoing peace talks in Cuba could be suspended, following a spate of rebel attacks nationwide.

“You are playing with fire and the (peace) process can end,” Santos said on Tuesday (July 29) during celebrations marking the 150th anniversary of a sugar manufacturing company in the southwestern Cauca Valley.

Santos dubbed “madness” the latest attack by FARC, in which several electricity towers were dynamited on Monday (July 28), blacking out the port of Buenaventura, Colombia’s largest on the Pacific coast, and leaving 400,000 people without electrical party.

COMMENT: I have repeatedly said that any peace negotiations in the absence of a cease-fire borders on INSANITY. I still support that statement.

Every successful peace accord I know of--that's 70+ years--has resulted in a lasting peace has NEVER been ratified without an enforced CEASE-FIRE.

If I were in President Santos' shoes, I would insist on a cease-fire NOW before any further meetings between the Colombian government and the FARC are scheduled.
In recent weeks, the FARC, which has killed roughly 200,000 Colombians on both sides.

The FARC has been jeopardizing the Colombian economy for over 50 years. It is time for this to end. Period.
