Perú: Israeli Backpackers Capsize on Apurímac River, One Body Found, One Missing

According to The Jerusalem Posthelicopter search-and-rescue team found the body of an Israeli tourist who went missing in Perú after a rafting accident on Monday, as confirmed by the Foreign Ministry. 

The body was found on one of the river banks by an insurance company's helicopter search-and-rescue team, which identified the body as that of an Israeli. 

The Foreign Ministry said that an additional helicopter will come to retrieve the body from the scene as soon as dawn breaks. 

Another Israeli tourist remains missing as of Friday (October 10).

The rafting accident occurred on October 6 in the Apurimac River. Six other Israelis on the raft found their way to safety.

COMMENT: According to the Foreign Ministry, a local guide on the raft reported the accident, and local search teams--augmented by a team sent by an insurance company--were searching the river bank for the missing Israelis. Their families have been notified.

The Israeli consul general in Lima, Amir Cohen, as well as embassy staff and officials from the consular section in Jerusalem, were in constant contact with local authorities, the search teams and the insurance company continue the search.

Perú is a popular destination for Israeli backpackers, with white-water rafting on the scenic river in southern Perú.
