According to Reuters, United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon said on Tuesday (November 4) that the holding of separatist elections in eastern Ukraine on the weekend was "unfortunate and counterproductive."
Pro-Russian rebels elected their own leadership on Sunday (November 2) in a vote denounced by Kiev and the West, further deepening a standoff with Russian President Vladimir Putin over the future of the former Soviet state.
Ban, addressing the Vienna-based Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE), said the situation in Ukraine remained a matter of deep concern.
COMMENT: Of late, the UN, NATO, the OSCE, the US apparently has only MREs to provide the Kiev government, desperate for weapons and ammunition with which to repel pro-Russian forces operating on Ukrainian soil.
In an apparent slap in the face, the Obama Administration has simply dodged its inherent responsibility to promote democracy worldwide and risk Russia prevailing in its conflict in the Ukraine. Rarely has Washington not come to the aid of governments wishing to remain free.
More than 4,000 people have been killed in the conflict, which began after the overthrow of Ukraine's Moscow-backed leader, Viktor Yanukovich, in February. Ukraine and the West have accused Russia of sending weapons and soldiers to help the rebels, a charge Moscow denies.
A September 5 cease-fire agreed upon in the Belarusian capital of Minsk continues to function in name only. Where is anyone that cherishes democracy?
